Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University Offers Master of Science in Safety Science Degree Program

Safety is a sophisticated business. Technology is expensive, failure is more expensive. Airplane/road vehicles crash, petrochemical/nuclear plants explode, medical error/bad backs cost billions. The Masters in Safety Science gives you specialized knowledge/tools to succeed as a safety professional.

The Master of Science in Safety Science (MSSS) degree program is designed to provide students with various quantitative backgrounds with the knowledge and skills necessary to pursue careers in aviation or general industry safety and government agencies. Graduates are prepared to sit for the preliminary parts of professional examinations in safety (ASP / CSP), ergonomics (AEP / CEA / CPE) and industrial hygiene (CIH).

The program has two main concentrations – Aviation Safety and Occupational Safety although there are many common courses in Quantitative Methods, Ergonomics / Human Factors, Accident Investigation, Occupational Health and Safety, Industrial Hygiene, System Safety and a Research Practicum. In addition students may specialize in aviation accident investigation, general aviation safety or occupational health and safety.

The department faculty has a wide range of experience in aviation and industry and brings extensive research and teaching experience. Furthermore the course formats have a blend of classroom theory, laboratory exercises and applied projects. These experiences are facilitated by well equipped laboratories including an outstanding “aviation crash laboratory” which has a dozen distinctly different crash sites for students to analyze. The “graduate laboratory” is well equipped with computers which have advanced analytic software for project planning, anthropometry, biomechanics, work physiology, statistical analysis, reliability analysis and simulation. The department also houses one of the world’s most detailed collections of aviation accident archives.

Graduates from the program are rounded professionals with a blend of academic knowledge, an extensive bag of analytical skills and a good foundation of practical experience necessary for a career in safety practice and program management.
